We had the pleasure of sitting down with one our Adoption@Heart Social Workers - Amy, to learn more about her role at Adoption@Heart.
What I love about working in adoption is the varied role we have. We support our adopters from their first point of contact with Adoption at heart, through to the granting of an adoption order for a child. My role consists of building relationships with prospective adopters within their assessment to learn all about them and their ability to care for a child, who is adopted. We also support our families to attend adoption panels, linking and matching with children and learning all about a child’s needs and how they can prepare to become their adoptive parents. I also really enjoy supporting adopters with meeting their child and introductions, and whilst this can be challenging at times as a child is going through so much change, we all work together as a team to support a child with moving to their adoptive home. We also support our families to the point of the adoption order being granted, so are part of their whole adoption journey.
Understandably an adoption journey for a child and for prospective adopters is of course challenging and very emotive at times. We have to work together as a team to achieve the best outcomes for our children and be child centred in everything we do. This requires a lot of hard work, patience, understanding and sometimes difficult conversations with our adoptive families to be able to overcome any challenges. However, it is so rewarding when a child is provided with so much love, stability and acceptance by their adoptive family.
I have worked within other areas of social work previously and thought it was really important for me to understand and develop my practice within adoption and enhance my understanding and professional skills within adoption and the life long journey for a child.
I would say becoming a parent through adoption is life changing and it is a lifelong commitment to a child. We fully appreciate the adoption process is very emotive and challenging at times and so prospective adopters need to be emotionally and practically ready and be open to learning. Most importantly anyone needs to be ready to provide love, stability and true acceptance for a child. We are there to support every step of the way.
