How do I apply for Step Parent Adoption?

If you decide to go ahead, you must tell the Local Authority/Children’s Trust where you live that you intend to apply for an adoption order. This is best done in writing and before you start the court application. They will meet with you to explain what is involved and will guide you through the process.

Before contacting your Local Authority or Children’s Trust please be aware that:

  • The local authority/trust must be notified at least 3 months before you make an application to court for an Adoption Order
  • The stepparent must be 21 years old or over
  • The birth parent must be 18 years or over
  • Couples must be in a stable relationship for at least 12 months and preferably longer
  • The child must have lived with you both for a minimum of 6 months prior to the application
